| Huskies often regard cats and other small animals as "chew toys" especially
when introduced to the animal as an adult dog. Cats are especially tempting to a husky. If a puppy grows up with an adult cat in the house, the cat will be able to discipline the pup and train it to respect the cat's space and existence. Let the cat hiss and slap at the pup while the pup is small. That way the pup will learn and they will be able to live in reasonable harmony. If the puppy is introduced to an older dog things usually go along smoothly. Dogs have a very structured hierarchy in the pack and everyone can sort out fairly quickly where each fits in the scheme of things. Be sure, though, to supervise the first few encounters between your current dog and a new puppy and to give your first dog a lot of attention. Your current dog may at first feel he is about to be replaced by the new upstart and get jealous and cranky. Most older dogs, however, will put up with a lot of stuff from a pup that they would not tolerate from an adult dog. This applies evenly to both male and female older dogs. They seem to understand that this is a stupid young kid, and while occasionally they will reprimand them when they go a little far, most older dogs are very tolerant of a pup after a proper introduction. It is good to reward your older dog when he shows tolerance toward a new pup. Make sure the original dog still knows he is "number 1" in your household. The dog and pup in the picture got to know each other very quickly. In spite of the fact that the German Shepherd Dog can be very protective, he has adopted the little one as his younger brother. And "Hockey", the kid, loves big brother too. |
