| OK, if you are offended by the word Poop, then better click here as the issues with food will include the food before, during and after. | ||
| General information | ||
| This may seem a simple issue at first, but like most things in life you get what
you pay for and Dog and Puppy food is no different. First, a little background on the Siberian Husky's digestive system. They have a relatively short intestinal tract and this means they need high-fat and protein content in their food in order to absorb optimal nourishment. A down-side to this short tract is that high fiber foods will increase the speed of movement through the dog's system. This does two things, first it makes them poop a lot more and second, by speeding up the process, it gives their system less time to absorb the nutrients. |

| Good Dog Food and how to Pick it. | ||
| Take a trip through your local Pet store and read the contents or ingredients lists.
If it has corn near or at the beginning of the ingredients list, then move to another brand or type within that
same brand. You will notice that the more roughage (Corn, soy etc.) the food contains, the lower the cost of the food. Be warned, the cheaper, high fiber food may be over-flavored and the dog will love to eat it, but, it will be pooping a lot more and maybe even losing weight. Next look for fat content. Good Dog and Puppy food will almost always laud the amount of Fat it contains with statements like, "Now with 16% Fat." The higher the Fat content, the better it usually is for your normal weight, active Husky. One more indicator of good food will be that "Amount per Dog-weight" chart or table. Your Husky is going to end up at around the 60lb mark. Good Dog food will require feeding between 2-cups and 2-3/4 cups for a dog in that range. It will have at least 16% fat and about 18% protein.Grab that bag and make a break for the checkout. Your dog will love you. The not-so-good food will have a lot of corn, soy or other filler grain, cost about 6-bucks a bag and require 5 to 7 cups for a dog in the husky weight range. The better you feed your husky, the healthier it will remain. We use only 2 to 2-3/4 cup feeds. |

| Find out what your Husky likes to eat | ||
| If the dog or puppy does not seem to eat much food and is not pooping a normal amount,
it may not like the taste of the food. Dogs, like humans, can have preferences in what they eat.. So off to the
Pet store and try again. If you need to change food, try small bags of food one at time. Do not give the dog two or three samples at once as it will simply graze from one to another giving little real indication of what it likes. The idea is to feed your pet one brand and type for about a week. If it appears not to be eating enough by the end of the week, try a different style or brand of good dog food. If the Husky appears to be happy and healthy but has runny poop , it may be caused by the food. Even if it is one of the "good" foods, you will need to find another brand or type and try again. (If loose stools persist for more than a few day please take your pup to the vet. A small puppy can quickly become dehydrated.) |

| What to feed a Puppy and for how long. | ||
| At the Pet store, look for food labeled "Large breed Puppy" Make sure it
fits in with the fat content, protein and roughage levels we have just mentioned. Puppies may need some weaning
onto all dry food after leaving Mom's milk supply; if so mix in about 1/3 of a can of wet food with the dry food.
Slowly drop the amount of wet food over the next few weeks. The criteria for good wet food is the same as for dry food but the percentages on the can will appear different because of the amount of water in canned food.We like Pedigree canned puppy which has about 8% protein and 7-9% fat on the label. There are other good brands also. At about age 10 months, you can begin to feed your husky Adult Dog food. Remember all of the things that go into making dog food, "good" for your Siberian Husky. |
||
| What to feed a full size Dog. | ||
| Well, you have made it this far so this is easy. Give your Husky Adult Dog food that
complies with the "good" food requirements. It is a good idea to stick to the brand that has worked for
the dog as a pup or something of equally high quality We use a 30% protein 20% fat Adult Dog Food. Slightly lower amounts of protein and fat may be appropriate depending on your dog's activity level weight and your veterinarian's advice. We like Iam's and Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy Chow for 10 months and then Regular Adult Foods. There are many good brands available in your pet food stores but Iam's is available in both grocery and discount stores. Dogs love to chew on bones and if you are going to give them some, look for something that is too big to chew up into pieces and swallow, Beef shin bones are a great idea. Dog Biscuits and hard chews made specifically for dogs are a nice treat. Feed your dog well and you will both be rewarded by better health and a longer life for your pet. Be sure to include a large dose of love and playtime with whatever diet works best for you and your dog. If you have specific questions please ask your vet or feel free to email us for recommendations. |
